ALMOST HUMAN THE REBELLION - 9
One lifetime is never enough; there are still mountains to climb, flowers to smell, the urge wanting to conquer and win at all cost, and yet, death remains the constant buffer for which we will face one day. Once it arrives, embrace it fiercely just as you have lived this lifetime as if it was your last. Breathe in its lust or hatred, give in to the final fall into Its arms, let the entire universe know you have not gone in vain. Feel the force of Its wings bringing you higher to a place where others are residing peacefully in their own fashion.

REYKYAVIK (ICELAND): The World Council Union Federation today decided after deliberating on the motion presented to immortalise Alexis Williams to the rank of a General after giving her life to save humanity in the line of duty.

She has also been recognised as The Peacemaker for bringing both the rebels and the Kapitolls leadership to a united front in saving the lives of many with a zero casualty rate as it is the first in history.

This included the recognition of ten genetically-engineered soldiers who has rejoined as part of the peace pact with the Kapitoll which included among others to be granted the same rights and privileges as human beings with immediate effect.

This included that a place locally known as Elysium would instead be honored and its landscape would be changed into an honorary national cemetery.

President Amanda Cole also vowed to ensure security remains prominent for both civilians and soldiers.

Meanwhile, speculations are rife with the deceaseds elder twin brother, General Frank Williams, who is said to have retired from duty.

The 17-year-old veteran remained silent when contacted to comment on the accolade presented to his late sister.

He also declined to comment to confirm or deny that he has left the Special Forces platoon.

It is learned that he has retired from the military with honours.

The news article rattled Frank to the core. He wanted to disappear from civil society and being questioned by the press community for Alexis bravery in saving humanity from being extinct.

He was definitely proud of her and yet he mourned for her presence every day. He could still remember her last words to release her mid-battle and the memory exercises which she was forced to undergo to recall the reason for her existence.

Before he could crumple the article away, Elisabeth was in the kitchens doorway with two mugs of tea in each hand.

Grab the sandwiches on the table while we sit outside at the patio. Its too good to stay in, she said.

Frank did as he was asked and strutted along with a puppy which they found as a stray near their new home deep in the forest.

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon as both of them started having their light lunch. Elisabeth had prepared a few slices of Franks favourite smoke turkey sandwiches while she ate her own version of a vegetarian one.

It had been several months now since they underwent their last mission. President Cole spoke at length with him to join her as a Defense Advisor in her administration which he naturally declined.

The cabin which both he and Elisabeth were staying now was alongside a river filled with fishes and other natural wonders which he had to discover yet. Even as an action-oriented young man, he still yearned for peace.

He was after all only 17 years old but with an old soul of a 27 year old man.

Remembering Josef before he left the Kapitoll to his undisclosed hideout, Frank remembered the guardians somber expression when he gave the commander a ring with a small golden eagle crest with its wings stretched out etched on it.

Josef demonstrated that a tiny switch had been placed on the rings side with Alexis voice recording before they embarked on their mission.

She made me promise to give it to you if she didnt make it, the guardian said.

Frank was too shocked for words. He placed his palm out, pondering if he should actually listen to the last message of his twin.

He took out the ring now as he lay back on his armchair, examining it against the light. It sparkled in the sunlight but the information inside it was worth more.

There was a sense of curiosity in him about the hidden code within the gift. Then, a sudden wave of grief swept over him recalling their last mission together.

Placing the ring away in his pocket, he continued basking in the new sanctuary which both he and Elisabeth had built together.

They had been companions since they first met on his 11th birthday.

She belongs to you now, General Williams. Our first artificial intelligence agent suited to your needs, he remembered as an instructor introduced them for the first time on November 10th.

The instructor was a sleazy character with a palate for striking the male cadets with the hard end of a laser gun, notwithstanding the constant tacky gaze at the female ones too.

There were no reasons given for Elisabeth to be with him. The first noticeable feature which he noticed about Elisabeth was her lips which would brighten up her eyes whenever she smiled.

They did not get along well at first because Frank was used to the female cadets brusque attitude. They were combat supersoldiers after all.

Both of them sometimes fought as often children do with Elisabeth following him to his room or joining for dinner at the mess hall except she would sit far away at the end of another table.

When he underwent reconnaissance mind-missions, she would stare through a glass window, witnessing his body jerk slightly or flinch to avoid a tree or hidden behind a tall building. She knew his dislikes for strawberries because he was allergic to it, or the love he had for Alexis. Without Franks knowledge, Elisabeth was created to not only observe but to become his partner one day. He was that valuable to the Kapitoll.

He hated having a shadow watching over him. In his attempt of getting rid of her, Frank repeatedly called on to his instructor to return Elisabeth to wherever she came from. He gave numerous excuses while she watched on silently. It was an eerie experience for him.

The answer was always a simple No.

Im yours to do as you please, she said one day when they were alone in the academys garden. It was in the afternoon and both were resting underneath a chestnut tree after another simulation exercise.

They had then known each other for three years. In response, he said: I dont know what you mean but youre not my slave. Youre free to join the others too.

No. I belong to you. Ive been programmed to response to your needs, she replied softly.

That gentle nature and quiet voice, he thought silently. It irritated the hell out of him.

All right, he said I need you to leave me alone. Now. Forever. Can you do that

Elisabeth shook her head. No, of course not. Dont be so stubborn.

Youre here not because you wanted to but you were a gift to me. Ill never understand the reasons behind it until today, he grumbled, placing both his hands behind his head.

There was a slight breeze which allowed to rest and Frank closed his eyes for awhile.

It was a good ten minutes when he heard Elisabeth crying softly beside him.

He woke up, touching her shoulder. Hey, sshh shhh Im sorry, all right I just dont like the idea of babysitting you every day, or treating you like a toy. It just feels wrong.

She kept on crying, her cheeks now bright red.

He turned her around and took out a handkerchief from his pockets. Wiping the tears away, he could see the tiny golden freckles in her green eyes.

Perfection, he thought.

For the first time in three years, Elisabeth left him alone, first walking fast which turned into a small jog to her room. She left the handkerchief on the ground.

As a 13-year-old teenager, he was confused with her reaction against him. Picking up the handkerchief, he felt the urge to comfort her.

He decided to leave her alone while she looked from above the window sill, willing him to come and search for her.

He merely stood still as she continued to run away from him.

Frank still broke out in sweat with nightmares of being stranded in Elysium. He knew that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder but refused to allow any medical attention. He wanted to feel the pain until the day it passed on naturally.

As he munched on his third sandwich, Elisabeths palm started to vibrate with an incoming call. She was about to answer it until he reached out to stop her.

Let it go. I know Coles been trying to reach me, he said.

Elisabeth shook her head. Its not her. Its Josef. He says its urgent.

What could be more urgent than having to fly to the Kapitoll Frank mused.

Elisabeth stared at her palm again. Finally, a holographic image appeared with Josef looking bemused.

Hullo. Enjoying early retirement, are we he asked with a hint of cynicism.

Frank held out his food. Youre welcome to join us. You know our location although weve told you not to invade our privacy, Josef, he said.

Josef pressed on anyway. Look, theres something that you ought to see. Its Alexis. Shes alive.

Immediately, Frank stood up.

I see that Ive your attention now. Can you get ready in half an hour asked the guardian.

Frank pointed at the image. If this is some attempt to get me back to join them, Ill say this to hell with it!

But Josef was a patient man. He knew if he did not relay this message soon, it would not be fair to Frank and his cause.

I can assure you this isnt a trick, Frank. You should see her immediately. At least, see our work in reviving her consciousness.

Her what asked Elisabeth. Now, both of them could not believe their ears.

Yes, her consciousness. The lab coats here have preserved it when she was training at the academy up till her last mission with both of you. Theyre this close to place her conscience into a newly-enhanced genetically-engineered body. Shell need to see you, Frank, especially since youre closest to her.

Frank smacked the wooden table near him. Are you hearing-impaired, man Theyve cloned her Those lab coats havent learned a single thing since we engaged with the Sentinels that we already lost her That its not really her that theyre seeing but merely a replica of her mind he asked vehemently.

Josef was silent.

Its her, Josef. Its not a carbon copy or a clone. Its under a new scientific programme to allow a deceased soldiers conscious be reactivated in a new body created the same but made better.

Better to fight in a battle and to let them rot when theyre useless, eh No, Josef, my friend, no. Weve been through this which was the main reason I and a few of us sane soldiers defected to the sewers in the first place. She chose to die, damn it! Thisthis article which Im holding in my hand here he raised it high above his head proves it and follows to the letter that we are finally equal with humans. Were equal now!

The guardian knew when he was beaten but left with a final note before signing off. I understand your grief, Frank. I was there too, remember I have the same nightmares which we all share here.

Call me once youre actually ready to meet her. Ill have my chopper ready whenever you need it, he ended.

Meanwhile, in a laboratory underneath in a newly-built academy, a group of scientists peered into the blood-filled crche where Alexis was laid last.

Using several tubes attached to the crche, they extracted the liquid leaving her remains intact and inserted instead a fluid similarly used during an embalming process on a cadaver.

Her once olive skin was now pale as a ghost. Carefully, they placed her on a dissecting table which would later be kept in a coolant structure where other soldiers which the council deemed worthy were kept for further experimentation.

In a separate darkened room, President Cole stood beside Josef as both stood in fascination at rainbow-coloured chroma entrapped in a shield transparent glass.

Isnt she beautiful Cole whispered in awe. All this while, we were waiting for the perfect soldier and there she is just waiting to be resurrected. It wasnt her brother. It was her all along.

Has there been any word from Frank since you last met him she asked.

Josef quivered at the question. He disliked relaying bad news to the president but eventually followed through his own conclusion that it would not do her any harm.

He has refused the invitation which youve extended, Madam President. Hes still mourning for his twin which is natural given the circumstances.

Cole nodded thoughtfully. Yes, I agree. Its been almost half a year now. The mission report sent to me concluded that she sacrificed herself despite Franks repeated warnings of her imminent death.

But, shell be remembered for her deeds. History will record with her name as our heroine who we created in our image who successfully saved humanity from extinction.

Cole stood closer now towards the glass with her fingers touching its surface. The glow emanated brightened.

Interesting, she noted. Its as if it knows me.

Josef watched with a sense of apprehension at the scene enveloping in front of him. He sensed an unshakable feeling that Cole wanted complete control of Alexis last consciousness.

Faking a cough, he said, There have been developments in the test runs which showed that should we continue transferring her consciousness into her current remains there will be consequences which well need to deal with immediately.

Cole, undeterred, continued touching the glass. Oh Will she survive the next procedure she asked.

Josef shook his head. Not at all, Madam President. Its because this is a new experiment even which the scientists are reluctant to undertake because of the risks involved.

That her current remains are already decomposing and youll need a new body to host her conscious. Ive thought of that myself before coming here, said Cole.

I was a geneticist before they elected me as a leader, you know, she said. I know youll be asking me to approve for a new physical form for the upcoming phase.

Which is against the councils resolutions to use a deceased soldiers soul, Josef added testily. Even Frank is against the idea of reviving her. She did make a choice not to live, Madam President.

She turned towards Alexis former guardian. Do you remember during one of our conversations that I vowed to create soldiers in our fashion to protect against all form of enemies, including those potentially pose a threat to our mere existence

I still hold onto that promise, whether you like or not.

From underneath her coat, she handed a see-through tablet to the guardian.

Well use a new supersoldier which has already been commissioned for active duty. See to the authorisation process is sealed under another generals name if needed. If Alexis consciousnesses proves useful once merged with her new physical being, well continue her activities. If she shows to be otherwise, Cole glanced again at the chroma glass then well deal with it. Meanwhile, make sure this is not linked to me in any way.
